Snowland Service Group is Yushu prefecture's first and only not-for-profit organization, working to apply national and international funds directly toward sustainable micro-development and alleviation projects in all parts of the prefecture. Yushu prefecture is located in the South-West of Qinghai province, PRC and covers an area consisting of 6 counties, 8 towns, 49 townships, and 258 villages.
* SSG is comprised of a 24-member Board of Directors made up of senior members of the organization, the government and local communities.
* The group is directed by Mr Rinchen Dawa, himself an ex-government employee with many years experience in social and community development work.
* In terms of direct staff, SSG includes a salaried staff of 12 persons, 8 full time volunteers and a group of additional volunteer members numbering in the region of about 200.
* The total administrative budget is low at 8%. This enables 92% of funds to be directed to project development and implementation.
* There are at least two English-speaking members of the organization. In addition, 2 other English-speaking volunteers are available from time to time.
* All staff members are fluent in both Chinese and Tibetan.
Since 2001, SSG has been instrumental in successfully providing schools, vocational training, water sanitation facilities, health clinics, medical services, solar cookers, a cheese factory and many other goods and services that contribute toward enhancing the quality of life in villages and remote communities throughout the Yushu prefecture.
A significant goal of SSG is through project work, to promote the empowerment of Tibetan communities living on the Tibetan Plateau that in turn will influence their own development.
SSG will achieve this through a strategy that involves:
* Education (All kinds)
* Economic Development (people centered)
* Influential decision-making (policy advocacy)
And, in terms of Values, SSG will do this in a manner that is:
* Culturally appropriate
* Participatory (equality)
* Environmentally sustainable
