Petroleum in the environment refers to the polluting effects of petroleum extraction, refining, and transportation, and encompasses crude oil and any refined oil products such as kerosene or diesel. Examples of petroleum polluting the environment include oil spills that result from accidents in oil transportation, spills from loading and unloading oil, and discharging oil into the ocean when washing tanks in oil tankers.
